Abstract

Objective: to present in Portuguese language the terminology, concept, and description related to the prevention, classification nd treatment of diabetic foot disease established by the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWDGF). Methods:This is an update article. For production, the 2023 IWGDF publication was used as the main reference. Result: the term “diabetic foot” has been changed to “diabetic foot disease related to diabetes mellitus”. The IWGDF guidelines are based on scientific evidence and in the year 2023, they were developed into seven documents: 1 - Prevention of foot ulcers in people with diabetes; 2 - Classification of diabetic foot ulcers; 3 - Diagnosis and treatment of foot infection in people with diabetes; 4 - Diagnosis and treatment of peripheral arterial disease in people with foot ulcers and diabetes; 5 - Relief of foot ulcers in people with diabetes; 6 - Interventions to improve the healing of foot ulcers in people with diabetes; and 7 - Acute Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy. Conclusion: the guideline presents updated concepts and recommendations in various sections that allow professionals to plan, implement and evaluate more effective strategies.
